Certification Path

Who needs Core and how the technician path works

Core is the foundational examination used with an appropriate category exam for New York commercial pesticide technician certification. It tests principles that apply before, during, and after a pesticide application.

From apprentice to certified technician

An apprentice works under the supervision of a certified applicator. Certification allows the employee to perform eligible work with greater independence within the limits of the technician’s category and New York requirements.

Many employers set their own certification deadline for new hires. An employer’s deadline—such as 18 months—is a company policy, not a universal NYSDEC deadline.

How to register for the exam

  • Meet the applicable training, degree, or experience requirement.
  • Register in advance through the NYSDEC nForm examination process.
  • Provide the required course certificate, transcript, or verifiable experience documentation.
  • Pay the non-refundable exam fee during registration.
  • Make sure NYSDMV has a photograph on file for the certification ID card.

Where the exam can be taken

  • Online: remotely proctored from a compatible personal computer.
  • Test center: computer-based examination with an in-person proctor.
  • Paper: limited sessions at DEC regional offices.

Online testing requires a webcam, microphone, compatible computer, stable internet, and a private testing space. Mobile devices are not accepted for the online exam.

Before Exam Day

Fees, study materials, and retake rules

Understanding the official process can help you avoid preventable costs, delays, and repeated training requirements.

Official NYSDEC fees

  • $100 exam fee: Core plus one category exam taken in the same session.
  • $100 category-only exam fee: when a category is taken separately.
  • $450 certification fee: commercial technician or commercial applicator with one category after passing.
  • $150: each additional applicator category, where eligible.
Official state fees are paid to New York State and are not included with an Orbait purchase.

Official preparation basis

NYSDEC recommends studying the current Core manual and the Department’s pesticide laws and regulations. Orbait should be used as practice and reinforcement—not as a replacement for official materials or required training.

Why label comprehension matters

The Core exam includes 10 pesticide-label questions, and you must answer at least seven correctly. A strong total score does not compensate for missing the separate label minimum.

Build Exam Judgment

From memorizing facts to making the correct decision

Core questions can place several familiar facts inside one situation. The challenge is identifying which rule matters most and what action should come first.

Core Case Snapshot

One situation. Several competing details.

“A technician notices a leaking container during transport. The product is still in its original container, but the label is partially damaged and the vehicle also carries PPE and clean equipment. What should the technician address first?”

1

Read like an applicator

Locate the label statement, safety rule, environmental condition, or legal responsibility that controls the situation.

2

Prioritize risk and compliance

Separate distracting details from the immediate hazard and choose the response that protects people, property, and the environment.

3

Answer under exam pressure

Timed simulations help you recognize patterns, eliminate weak choices, and make defensible decisions without rushing.
