Core is the foundational examination used with an appropriate category exam for New York commercial pesticide technician certification. It tests principles that apply before, during, and after a pesticide application.
Commercial technician eligibility
An applicant must be at least 17 years old and qualify through one of the recognized paths.
- Complete a comprehensive NYSDEC-approved 30-hour training course; or
- Hold an eligible associate or bachelor’s degree covering the required topics; or
- Document two years of verifiable experience as a pesticide apprentice.
- Pass the Core exam and the appropriate category exam.
From apprentice to certified technician
An apprentice works under the supervision of a certified applicator. Certification allows the employee to perform eligible work with greater independence within the limits of the technician’s category and New York requirements.
How to register for the exam
- Meet the applicable training, degree, or experience requirement.
- Register in advance through the NYSDEC nForm examination process.
- Provide the required course certificate, transcript, or verifiable experience documentation.

What happens after unsuccessful attempts?
- After two failed Core attempts, complete eight additional credit hours of training before retaking Core.
- After passing Core, pass the appropriate category exam within six months.
- If the category is not passed within six months, Core must be taken again.
Official preparation basis

The New York pesticide Core exam contains 50 multiple-choice questions. Ten of those questions focus specifically on pesticide-label comprehension.
What score is required to pass the New York Core exam?
